OTOPLASTY

Corrective ear surgery

Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure that’s performed in both adults and children to correct protruding ears or reduce the size of or reshape abnormally large ears.

Graduated from New York University as a fellow of plastic surgery in 1990, Dr. Husami, MD, Cosmetic, Plastic and hand surgeon, explains all the details of ear surgery that has become one of the most popular procedures.
Correction of even minor deformities increases self-esteem.

Only a highly experienced board-certified plastic surgeon can undergo this procedure especially that techniques are individualized, in order not to distort other structures and to avoid an unnatural "pinned back" appearance as well as any possible asymmetry in ear placement.

Making sure that your doctor is registered in LSPRAS (www.lspras.com) is already the first step towards safety.

BEST CANDIDATES

• When the ears stick out from the head or are misshapen due to an injury or birth defect.
• Children and teen agers who get bullied because of their ears.
• Otoplasty is one of the top 10 most common procedures performed for men.
• Four percent of women seeking pre-wedding plastic surgery request otoplasty aiming to correct any lingering insecurities about their appearance.
• Generally 5 years old, or when a child's ear cartilage is stable enough for correction.

TECHNIQUES

Incisions for otoplasty are generally made on the back surface of the ear. When incisions are necessary on the front of the ear, they are made within its folds to hide them. Internal, non removable sutures are used to create and secure the newly shaped cartilage in place.

RESULTS

Results are almost immediate; with the ear permanently positioned closer to the head, surgical scars are either hidden behind the ear or well hidden within the natural creases of the ear.

ANESTHESIA
Otoplasty is performed using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia.
